We’re hiring: Environmental Monitoring & Citizen Science Project Manager

< Back to News

Source International is looking for a new Environmental Monitoring & Citizen Science Project Manager to join our team.

We are looking for an environmental scientist who wants to put scientific knowledge into practice, working alongside communities affected by pollution and extractive activities around the world. At Source International, environmental monitoring is not only about collecting data. It is about making scientific tools and evidence accessible to communities, supporting them in understanding the environmental impacts they face and producing robust data that can contribute to advocacy, legal action and environmental justice. Our new Project Manager will work across these different dimensions: field research, citizen science, community training, project development and management.

What will you do?

The role combines scientific and technical work with direct engagement with communities. You will help design and coordinate environmental monitoring and citizen science initiatives, working on water, soil, air and dust pollution and ensuring that sampling protocols, quality assurance and data management meet standards suitable for scientific and legal use.

A major part of the role will also involve training. You will work with local communities, including rural and marginalized groups, young people and children, to build their capacity to monitor their own environment. This may mean delivering environmental monitoring training in a community affected by mining, developing educational activities with schools, or helping local organizations establish long-term citizen science programmes.

The position also includes project management and fundraising: developing new project proposals, coordinating scientific, legal and local partners, communicating with donors and preparing project and financial reports. It is a varied role for someone who feels equally comfortable working in the field, discussing sampling methods with scientists, training a local community and writing a funding proposal.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with a background in Natural or Environmental Sciences, Biology, Geology or a related field, and at least three years of field experience in environmental monitoring, particularly related to water, soil or air.

Experience in training and working with rural or marginalized communities is particularly important, as are project-management and scientific-reporting skills. Fluent written and spoken English is required, while knowledge of Spanish, Italian, French or other languages is an asset. Because much of Source International’s work takes place directly in the areas affected by environmental injustice, candidates should also be prepared to work in remote and sometimes challenging environments and to engage professionally with very different social, cultural and political contexts.

Above all, we are looking for someone who shares the principles that guide our work: scientific independence, respect for the self-determination of the communities we work with, and a commitment to environmental and social justice.

What we offer

The position is home-based, with regular international field missions, including work in remote areas. The contract includes an initial three-month trial period followed by a full-time, open-ended position.   Joining Source International means becoming part of a small international team working at the intersection of science, human rights and environmental justice, collaborating directly with communities as well as universities, civil society organizations, international institutions and donors. It also means having the opportunity to work in very different places and contexts, learning continuously from the communities and partners we collaborate with and contributing directly to projects that can generate tangible change.
